Is Social Media Changing our Lives?

The Online Collaborative at the American University of Beirut announced a conference “Social Media Changing Lives”. This conference was handled yesterday Friday, Dec.16 at ISSAM FARES HALL at AUB. The conference gathered over 30 influencers from the Arab community and special performance by some of Lebanon’s most talented musicians. The aim of this conference was to discuss how social media is changing fields such as education, culture, business, media and journalism, music and art, NGOs, politics, religion, human rights, science, the environment and the personal lives of everyone who is using them.

The conference started 12 pm and finished 9 pm. I arrived 4:45 pm, I entered quickly and sat on the left side of the Hall. Maan Barazi, editor at e Business Lebanon, was talking about blogs, facebook, twitter and other social media networks. “I don’t know if social media is changing our lives or we are changing social media,” Barazi said, “really I don’t know what is real and fake on social media,” Barazi added. Maan Barazi explained that the media content is non-credible. The best thing in this conference is that every speaker has a 10 minutes speech and this makes the conference more active. Kamal Chelhot, marketing director at L’Orient le Jour, asked the government about the 4G network connection that would let the users download a movie in 6 seconds. A comedian show was performed by Malek Teffaha, or the owner of the apple as he said. He was so funny. The audience t laughed loudly when he was performing about the social media. Indeed, Esraa Haidar, owner and manager Consult-E Marketing, informed how she used social media to tell how she is discriminated and rejected because she is veiled. They all had a story to share. And you also can share yours, speak loudly with no borders and say what you want with no fear. Did the social media influence the “Arab Spring” or the political decisions? A question I want to share.

A Blog Became a Book

It was around 5 pm, we waited for Nasri Atallah and finally he appeared. He entered with a smiley face, the same face expressions when he was signing his first book in a Pub in Beirut. Nasri Atallah, a blogger, an editor and a writer, was born in London. He finished his high school here in Lebanon then he went back to London. He worked in a private Bank for two years and a half, then he dived into advertising. His father is a journalist, so he came back to Lebanon to arrange a new magazine project that didn't arise.
Nasri chose to start blogging. "I posted what annoys me,"Atallah said. From blogger, to facebook, twitter and flicker, Atallah used the social media networks to say what is in his mind. Atallah was shocked from the thousands of responds he received. "I have lovers and haters," Atallah notified, "but the haters are funny," he added. Nasri Atallah posts for Lebanese who don't live in Lebanon and have an obvious view about Lebanon. "My friends suggested publishing a book," Atallah said. Atallah got lazy about publishing, then he searched for a publisher to start publishing his book and he did it. Atallah published his book "Our Man in Beirut...collected rants" and signed it last week. "A blog became a book," Atallah said loudly, "I will publish a book every year," he added. Nasri Atallah now works as an editor, he edits English novels.

About The Film:
Imane, a 47 years old menopausal widow thinks that she is doing the right thing towards her dead husband. Will the 18 years old Wael be able to let her go with his way? The film is about the Motaa marriage contract and religious beliefs in the Shiite society, but above all it is about how everyone perceives religion according to his or her own desires.

About The Director:
Farah Shaer (born on May 28, 1987) is an ambitious Lebanese young director and actress. In 2008, she got her first B.A. in Journalism (with Distinction) where she also directed her first documentary "Culture of Death" that participated in Al Jazeera Documentary Film Festival (Qatar). In 2009, Farah Shaer started acting in several theater plays and short films where she firstly performed the monologue play "Viva La Diva" during the UNESCO Universities Theater Festival which won the 1st prize. In 2010, She directed (and acted in) her first play "Guantanamo … Meaning of Waiting" that participated in the 13th LAU International Theater Festival, Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theater, and Amman International Theater Festival. In 2011, she got another B.A. in Radio/TV/Film from The Lebanese American University - LAU (with Distinction) whereby she also directed her first short film "I Offered You Pleasure - وهبتك المتعة" that will be screened for the first time in The 5th NDU Film Festival. Recently, Farah Shaer has joined the LBCI TV group as an actress in the prime time comedy program "Ma7allo" besides directing a documentary film for the UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund in Lebanon.

Corruption is a disease striking only weak persons. People corrupt or use corruption as a tool to reach their nasty goals. Here in Lebanon people are used to it. It was a horrible end for the famous leader Moammar El Qaddafi. Yesterday and after 7 months of fighting for freedom, Moammar El Qaddafi was found hiding under ground with his son Moatasem. Some news said that he was killed before he was caught and others mentioned that he was alive when the revolutionists arrested him. Videos that were shown on TVs show that he was alive during his arrest then he was shot in his head and stomach. The videos are so harsh to watch, so I uploaded this video to make you laugh. The Qaddafi with all his crazy power and his believes in surviving shocked the whole world in his disgusting death. Qaddafi was known in his funny quotes and statements. The Qaddafi kingdom fell down leaving too many questions behind it.

During my social media class, we met the Journalist Phil Rees. Phil Rees a journalist, worked for 30 years in his domain. He worked 19 years in BBC, and then in his own broadcast Journalism Company. The meeting was not face to face. It was like this picture, on Skype. A "distance" communication, we were sitting in a conference room and he was sitting in his office far there in London. It was not boring, some journalism students were pitching and sharing some topics they want to talk about and he was giving them some ideas, while I was writing this post and checking my facebook page. One hour passed, I quietly excused going.

In my social media class due to a homework I was given on Wednesday Oct. 12, 2011, I was forced to write this post for my teacher about 5 blogs I visit. So, dear blogs that I will not mention in this post, don't get mad or angry, it is just homework and I will still like your blogs. Notice that in the coming days, I will visit some blogs and add them to my blog list. First blog I want to talk about is my uncle's blog "Urshalim" a blog from Lebanon with no borders in mind. This blog started publishing on 2004 about news, politics, economics, social issues and other funny posts. Whatever he thinks is interesting he post. But now this year the blog retired after 8 years of publishing, it is a big loss. Second blog is my cousin's blog, "Hadi Aram". I think I should like it, he is my cousin. This blog started publishing since 2005 and still. No it is not retiring, it still has some power. This blog is just for Hadi's photos and activities. Third blog is "Meyroun". Meyroun is a blog called a "Meyroun a drawing book". In this blog you see pictures with a brief sentence under them. Most of Meyroun's posts are funny and you enjoy reading them. Fourth blog is "Blog Baladi". This is a Lebanon blog; you can find many stories happening in Lebanon and around the world. It is different from others because the posts are in a funny and enjoyable way. Fifth blog is "+961". This blog is also a Lebanese blog like other blogs that talks about Lebanese news and several issues. The idea beyond blogs, that they describe thoughts, marks and ideas that you can share and comment.

Steve Jobs didn't die; he is still alive within us. Oh, sorry I thought he was one of the Lebanese politicians. We love you Steve, dads love you. IPad, iPhone, iPod, Mac, and Apple, too much things you did but hey they are so, so and so expensive, that is why dads love you Steve. Yesterday all contacts on facebook and twitter were sad, even some said that Syria was involved in his death. Another new thing this year, iPhone 5. Steve your friends around the world invented some things like iSad, iMad and others. Really I don't know what they are. Steve Jobs left us at age of 56, too soon Steve and too money you have. Sorry for those who love Apple or carry anything related to Apple. President Barrack Obama also loves Steve, maybe he has an iPhone or iPad, offcourse he should. A very important issue was raised after his death, he is Syrian. Wow, that is why Arabs love him, so interesting. Then Syria didn't kill him, Israel did. Steve Jobs the inventor and creator of Apple Company died, Syria and Israel didn't kill him, but cancer did. I hate you cancer. Rest in peace dear Steve. Great inventor and great man.

This semester at LAU Beirut campus was different than the previous ones. When you arrive to university you will be shocked by the bunch of huge posters that are found everywhere. No it is not a poster for a naked woman or a handsome guy. It is a huge poster with non-smoking sign. Yes, finally the adminstrator set the rule and everybody should love and like it and especially the smokers. Why? Because they want to stop, they are ready but they want someone to guide them. Ok, let me stop lies, everybody is angry and the smokers want their right. Smokers are humans like humans but they have a small thing in their mouth that makes clouds and it is really nice. So what happened? Till now, nothing, the ones who can hide from the security they are smoking and others are standing outside the upper gate where Ali's small coffee center is and smoking. I was thinking what the difference between standing in or out, nothing it is a stupid thing. They want to save their health, they are still smoking or they want to save the environment, it is still under danger. Oh, s/he is smoking outside then the world is save, sorry s/he is not smoking out the earth, out the campus. All what happened that there is a huge traffic outside the upper gate. So, nothing changes, if you don't change yourself.

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son waiting for him at the door.

SON: 'Daddy, may I ask you a question?'

DAD: 'Yeah sure, what it is?' replied the man.

SON: 'Daddy, how much do you make an hour?'

DAD: 'That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?' the man said angrily.

SON: 'I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?'

DAD: 'If you must know, I make $50 an hour.'

SON: 'Oh,' the little boy replied, with his head down.

SON: 'Daddy, may I please borrow $25?' The father was furious, 'If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I don't work hard everyday for such childish frivolities.' The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money? After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down , and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $25.00 and he really didn't ask for money very often The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door.

'Are you asleep, son?' He asked. 'No daddy, I'm awake,' replied the boy. 'I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier' said the man. 'It's been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here's the $25 you asked for.' The little boy sat straight up, smiling.

'Oh, thank you daddy!' he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills. The man saw that the boy already had money, started to get angry again. The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his father. 'Why do you want more money if you already have some?' the father grumbled. 'Because I didn't have enough, but now I do,' the little boy replied.

'Daddy, I have $50 now. Can I buy an hour of your time?

Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.'

The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little son, and he begged for his forgiveness. It's just a short reminder to all of you working so hard in life. We should not let time slip through our fingers without having spent some time with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts. Do remember to share that $50 worth of your time with someone you love. If we die tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of hours. But the family & friends we leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives.

كان هناك قرار لإنشاء مدينة جديدة ولكن اختلف المجلس على تسمية هذه المدنية فقرروا على أن كل واحد من المجلس يكتب أسم للمدينة في ورقة ومن ثم يتم عمل قرعة لسحب ورقة واحدة من الأوراق ليتم تسمية المدينة. والاسم الذي سوف يسحب سوف يكون هو اسم المدينة مهما كان الاسم. فكان من ضمن الأعضاء واحد زهقان من طيزه فكتب في الورقة 'طيزي'. وعندما تم السحب وكانت الورقة المحضوضة ورقة صاحبنا إلي كتب 'طيزي'. عندها كما تقرر تم تسمية المدنية باسم 'طيزي'.

وفي يوم من الأيام مر سائح على تلك المدينة وذهب ليشتري قميص من محل ملابس. فوجد البضاعة غالية بعض الشيء فقال لصاحب المحل: 'أليس السعر غالي بعض الشيء؟' فرد التاجر: 'لو تلف في طيزي ما بتلاقي ارخص'. فخرج السائح وهو زعلان مفكراً أن الرجل يهزأ منه. فأوقف سيارة تاكسي وسأله 'أين يوجد محل ملابس يبيع بسعر معقول؟'. فرد السائق 'هناك على طرف طيزي!'. وعندها تضايق السائح وذهب إلى مركز الشرطة ليشتكي فقال للشرطي: 'البائع يقول لي 'لو تلف طيزي' وسائق التاكسي يقول لي 'على طرف طيزي' شو وين أنا؟!. فقال الشرطي 'أنت في مركز الشرطة في نص طيزي'. وعندها تضايق السائح وقرر أن يشتكي لرئيس البلدية. وعندما دخل عليه قال له: ' أنا ضيف عليكم واعمل كتاجر كبير' فرد عليه رئيس البلدية: ' أهلاً وسهلاً ، نورت طيزي' وعندها فاض الكيل عند السائح فخرج غضبان وقرر أن يشتكي لملك البلاد. وبعد انتظار طويل سمحوا له بمقابلة الملك. فقال السائح: 'هذا غير معقول، أنا ضيف عندكم واعمل كتاجر كبير ويقول لي بائع الملابس 'لو تلف طيزي مابتلاقي ارخص والسواق يقول لي على طرف طيزي والشرطي يقول لي أنت في نص طيزي ورئيس البلدية يقول لي نورت طيزي، هذا غير معقول!'. فرد عليه الملك: 'هون من روعك معليش معليش ، يظهر عليك إنك أول مرة تدخل طيزي!
